Zachary Felty named Hale MS Teacher of the Year

Zachary Felty has been selected as the 2024-2025 Hale Middle School Teacher of the Year!

Zachary is in his third year teaching 6th grade world geography at Hale Middle, where he also serves as the 6th grade team lead. We asked Zachary a few questions to learn more about him and his time at Tulsa Public Schools.

Why did you want to work in education?

For ten years, I worked at QuikTrip as a trainer and assistant manager, where I found great fulfillment in teaching and developing new employees on policies and procedures. During this time, I also worked as a part-time substitute teacher, and I quickly realized how much I enjoyed being in a school setting. When I would go to work at QT, I often saw my students from school, and their excitement to see me reinforced how meaningful those connections were. It was in those moments that I recognized the importance of education in shaping future generations and the need for strong, positive male role models in students' lives.

Reflecting on my own experiences growing up, I didn’t have many positive male role models, and I struggled in school. The person who had the greatest impact on me was my high school band director. He constantly pushed me to be better and was always there to listen and offer guidance when I needed it. As I got older, I realized just how much his mentorship shaped my life, and I knew I wanted to have that same impact on my students. That realization led me to pursue a career in education, where I could be a source of support, encouragement, and guidance for young learners who, like me, might need someone to believe in them.

What has your time in Tulsa Public Schools been like?

Teaching 6th grade world geography at Hale Middle School has been both a rewarding and challenging experience. I have witnessed firsthand the struggles many of my students face outside the classroom. For some, I am one of the only positive male role models in their lives. These challenges extend beyond academics, shaping how I approach my role as a teacher—not just as an educator but as a mentor, advocate, and support system.

I have found immense fulfillment in creating a safe and open classroom environment where students feel valued, respected, and capable of success. Watching my students grow—not just academically but as young adults—has been the most rewarding part of my job. I have enjoyed building strong relationships with both my students and their families, knowing that these connections are critical to their success.

Teaching in this community has reinforced my belief in the power of education to change lives. While the challenges are real, the rewards far outweigh them. Seeing my students overcome obstacles, build confidence, and develop a sense of curiosity about the world makes every day in the classroom meaningful.

What are passionate about outside of work?

Outside of my work at Tulsa Public Schools, one of my greatest passions is traveling. I have been fortunate to visit Europe four times and explore 12 different countries, each trip broadening my perspective on different cultures, histories, and ways of life. Traveling allows me to experience new places firsthand, immerse myself in diverse traditions, and gain a deeper understanding of the world—something I love bringing back to my classroom.

Travel has also reinforced my passion for geography and global education, making it even more exciting to share my experiences with my students and inspire their curiosity about the world beyond their own communities.

Is there anything else you would like everyone to know?

Beyond my work in education, I am lucky to share my life with my loving husband of 11 years. In my free time, I enjoy learning music and playing video games, both of which allow me to relax, be creative, and challenge myself in different ways.

Whether in the classroom, traveling the world, or enjoying hobbies at home, I am always eager to learn, explore, and connect with others. I believe that education extends beyond textbooks, and I strive to bring that mindset into everything I do—both for my students and in my own life.
